VERNA YOUNG has been a member of the Harlingen CISD School Board since 2001, serving as Secretary of the Board in 2003-2004, as Vice-President in 2004-2005, President of the Board in 2005-2006, and Secretary for 2008-2009. She is a graduate of the 2003 class of Leadership TASB. Mrs. Young earned her B.A. degree cum laude from Baylor University in mathematics with membership in Alpha Chi, an honorary association. She earned her M.A. from Texas A&I University in 1970. Her 46 year career in education included teaching at Harlingen High School and Vernon Junior High School, followed by 9 years as principal of Bonham Elementary School and 16 years as principal of Harlingen High School. She was named Outstanding Principal of the Year in District I by Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association (TEPSA) in 1981, and by Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) in 1988 and 1999. In 1999, she was selected as one of the top five finalists in the state for outstanding high school principal. This past month she was the initial inductee into the Super Cardinal Hall of Fame at Harlingen High School for always proving “Cardinal Spirit Never Dies”. As an active member of the community, she has served on the Administrative Board of her church, Economic Development Committee for Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, Advisory Board for Junior League of Harlingen, Vocational Lane Chairman for North Harlingen Rotary Club and she is a graduate of Leadership Harlingen. Three times she has been awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership by Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers for her service to the children and youth of the community. Mrs. Young and her husband, Jerry, are the proud parents of three grown children, Denise, Randy, and Shelley. Their grandchildren include Amanda Young, who teaches third grade at Patterson Elementary in Houston ISD, Ashley Almon, who is completing her degree in Environmental Science, Chase Young, who is a senior at Harlingen High School, Michael Giglio, who is a junior at St. Thomas High School in Houston, and Kayla Giglio, who is a eighth grader at Spring Branch Middle School in Houston.
